Seven UCLA Players Competing in This Week's U.S. Open

NEW YORK - Six former UCLA players and one future Bruin are competing in this week's U.S. Open Tennis Championships at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.
Former Bruin Davide Sanguinetti (1992-93) of Italy is UCLA's lone entrant in the men's singles draw. He is scheduled to face Germany's Tommy Haas in the first round. UCLA also has two former players competing in doubles, as Marcin Matkowski (2001-03) and his partner Mariusz Fyrstenberg of Poland will take on American's Scoville Jenkins and Alex Kuznetsov. Justin Gimelstob (1995-96) is teaming with Graydon Oliver and they will take on France's Gregory Carraz/Arnaud Clement. Mark Knowles (1990-92) of the Bahamas and his partner Daniel Nestor of Canada, seeded third, will face Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten and Andre Sa in the first round. Knowles is also entered in the mixed doubles draw with Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova.
On the women's side, 2004 NCAA Doubles Champion Lauren Fisher (2001-04) and her partner Raquel Kops-Jones of Cal will do battle against Iveta Benesova/Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic. Fisher recently turned pro after completing her degree over the summer. Also competing in the doubles draw is incoming freshman Riza Zalameda. She is teaming with Audra Cohen and they will face eighth-seeded Anastasia Myskina and Vera Zvonareva of Russia. Former Bruin Abigail Spears (2000) is teaming with Bethanie Mattek and they are scheduled to take on Jennifer Hopkins/Mashona Washington of the United States. Spears, who also qualified for the singles draw, fell in the first round to Italy's Silvia Farina Elia, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Farina Elia was seeded 19th.
