TEMPE, Ariz. No. 1 ranked UCLA defeated Arizona State University, 194.275-193.4, in gymnastics Friday in front of 1,151 fans at Wells Fargo Arena. Freshman Tasha Schwikert of UCLA won the all-around with a score of 39.625. Senior teammate Kristen Maloney took second (39.575). Cassandra Jusino of ASU was third (39.225).
Maloney and Schwikert went 1-2 on vault with scores of 9.925 and 9.9, respectively, leading the Bruins to a team score of 49.025. ASU had to count one fall on vault after tumbles by Kari Muth and Donna Chance to lead off the event and posted a season-low 47.975. Junior Lauren Powell injured her right ankle on her vault and did not finish the meet.
ASU's top score on uneven bars was recorded by Ashley Kelly, who won with a season-high 9.925. Maloney and Schwikert tied for second-place, with each posting a 9.9. Bruin junior Kate Richardson was fourth (9.85). The Sun Devils registered their best bars team score of the season, a 48.85, while UCLA posted a 49.125 team score on bars.
Kelly won her second event of the evening, tying for first-place with Richardson on the balance beam with a season-high tying 9.925. Maloney was third (9.9) while Schwikert was fourth (9.875). ASU's 48.050 on beam was a season-low. UCLA registered a 48.75.
Schwikert placed first on the floor exercise with a 9.95, and Maloney was third with a 9.85 to post the Bruins' only floor scores of 9.5 or higher. UCLA posted a season-low team score of 47.375 on floor, counting two falls and suffering two out of bounds deductions. The low tally on floor did not hurt the Bruins, who had built up a big lead in the first two rotations (98.15-96.825) and still led, 145.525-144.875, heading into the final event. UCLA scored 48.75 on beam, while the Sun Devils fell short with a 48.525 on floor.
The Bruins' next competition is at third-ranked Michigan on Friday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 pm ET.
