UCLA sophomore gymnast Tasha Schwikert had successful right shoulder surgery on Monday and is expected to return to action in 2-3 months as she progresses with rehab.
Schwikert is the reigning NCAA, West Regional and Pac-10 all-around champion. Last season, she was selected the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and was the only gymnast to earn first-team All-America honors on all four events and the all-around at the NCAA Championships. She scored a UCLA freshman record 39.825 in the all-around in a Mar. 6 meet against Florida and recorded four perfect 10s on the year, two each on bars and floor. Schwikert, a two-time U.S. National all-around champion, was a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic squad and an alternate on the 2004 Olympic team. She captained the U.S. team to a gold medal at the 2003 World Championships and also won team bronze at the 2001 Worlds.
UCLA's season begins on Jan. 3 in Hawaii against Arkansas, California, Oregon State, Sacramento State and Washington. The Bruins' home opener is on Saturday, Jan. 7 against Utah at 6 pm in Pauley Pavilion.
