April 11, 2005

Rankin made history on Saturday at the third annual Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational as he broke the four-minute barrier in a special running of the mile race. His historic time of 3:57.89 was the fastest mile time ran in the world this year and was the first time since 1980 that a Bruin had broken the four-minute barrier (Ron Cornell, 1980). Rankin now ranks third on UCLA's all-time top-10 list and improved on his lifetime-best by nearly eight seconds.

This is Rankin's first UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and second of his career.

Also nominated: Daniela Bercek, W. Tennis; Monique Henderson, W. Track & Field; Daniel Im, M. Golf; Paul Johnson, M. Volleyball; Tasha Schwikert, W. Gymnastics; Emily Zaplatosch, Softball.
