Senior Kris Kwinta (Poznan, Poland/Tennessee) of the UCLA Men's Tennis Team was selected as the UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 23-30.
Kwinta led UCLA to its first NCAA men's tennis team title since 1984, clinching the championship with a come-from-behind victory over Baylor's Lars Poerschke, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. After his teammates rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the match at 3-3, the Championship rested on Kwinta's hands on court 3, and he pulled out the three-set victory for his only result of the Tournament (his other five matches were suspended). The Bruins snapped Baylor's 57-match winning streak, which was the second-longest streak in NCAA history.
Kwinta also teamed with Alberto Francis to earn All-NCAA Tournament honors at the No. 1 doubles position.
This is Kwinta's first UCLA/MET-Rx Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
Also nominated: Monique Henderson, W. Track & Field; Jon Rankin, M. Track & Field; Anjelica Selden, Softball; Riza Zalameda, W. Tennis.
