LOS ANGELES - The defending NCAA Champion UCLA men's tennis team moved a step closer in its quest to repeat Sunday, dispatching of Colorado, 4-0 in an NCAA Second Round match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the 10th-seeded Bruins (19-5) advance to face seventh-seeded Illinois (24-6) in next week's round of 16 in Stanford, Calif.
UCLA's Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol clinched the doubles point for the Bruins at court No. 2, registering an 8-4 victory over Geoffrey Chizever/Chad Tsuda. That win was preceded by an 8-3 victory at court No. 1 by Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Philipp Gruendler, who have now won 25 matches in a row. The duo is currently ranked second in the country.
Kohlloeffel, the nation's No. 1-ranked player, was even more impressive in singles Saturday, as he downed 51st-ranked Eric Molnar, 6-0, 6-0 at court No. 1. Kohlloeffel improves to 39-4 overall on the year and has won 19 of his last 20 matches.
Surapol was next to finish at court No. 5, as he put the Bruins ahead 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Tsuda. Surapol owns a 20-1 record in dual-match play this season with his only defeat coming in UCLA's 4-3 loss to top-ranked Georgia at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors.
Abid finished things off for the Bruins at court No. 2, recording a 6-2, 6-4 match-clinching victory over Peter Bjork.
When play was suspended, Mathieu Dehaine was up 7-5, 4-3 at court No. 3, while both Gruendler (court No. 4) and Michael Look (court No. 6) were up 2-1 in the third set of their respective matches.
UCLA and Illinois last faced off during the 2004 NCAA Semifinals in Tulsa, Okla. The Bruins won that match 4-3, snapping what still stands as the nation's longest winning streak at 64 matches.
