Los Angeles, Calif. - Despite a season-best all-around effort from junior Tasha Schwikert, the UCLA gymnastics team dropped a 196.975-195.525 decision to Stanford at Pauley Pavilion on Monday afternoon. Stanford took the lead in the first rotation and never relinquished it, hitting 24-for-24 en route to the second-highest team total in the nation so far this season.
The Bruins, who were competing for the second time in four days, totaled a 49.125 on vault in the first rotation. Schwikert led the squad with a 9.9, and Michelle Selesky and Anna Li recorded a pair of career-high 9.825s. Stanford had a strong bars set, scoring a 49.225 to take the early lead. The Cardinal was led by Liz Tricase, who scored a 9.925.
Down by a tenth of a point, the Bruins moved to the uneven bars for rotation two while Stanford moved to vault. The Cardinal stuck four-straight vaults in the middle of its rotation and received a pair of 9.9s from Tricase and Tabitha Yim to total 49.2, increasing its lead with a two-event total of 98.425. UCLA had steady scores on bars, with its highest being a 9.875 from Schwikert, and earned a team total of 48.95 for a two-event total of 98.075.
UCLA moved to beam in the third rotation and received a solid 9.8 leadoff score from Ariana Berlin. Schwikert added a season-high 9.875, and Kristina Comforte added a 9.775, but the Bruins had to count a fall plus a 9.5 score and came away with a beam total of 48.225. Stanford, meanwhile, increased its lead after scoring a 49.325 on floor, thanks in large part to a 9.925 from Carly Janiga and a 9.9 from Nicole Ourada.
The Cardinal entered the final rotation with a 1.45 lead, 147.750-146.300. The Bruins rebounded with big marks on floor. Ashley Peckett opened with a season-high 9.85, and Ashley Jenkins followed with a career-best 9.875. Janelle Dantzscher also scored a career-high, earning a 9.9, and Schwikert hit a season-best and meet-high tying 9.925 to give the Bruins a season-high 49.225 on the event. It wasn't enough, however, as the Cardinal blazed through balance beam with no falls and matched the Bruins' floor total. Yim led the way with a 9.95, and Kelly Fee added a 9.9.
Schwikert's floor mark of 9.925 helped her edge out Yim for first place in the all-around, 39.575-39.500. Schwikert's all-around total is the second-highest in the nation this year. She also picked up first-place ties on vault (9.9, tied with Yim and Tricase) and floor (9.925, tied with Janiga), tied for second with Janiga on bars (9.875) and placed third on beam (9.875).
