The UCLA men's golf team, ranked No.2 in the preseason polls, took the 36-hole lead at the 4th Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, hosted by Northwestern and Oregon at Chambers Bay Golf Course near Puget Sound.

The Bruins improved from their six-over par opening round of 294 by rallying with a one-under par 287 in the afternoon. Their two-round total of 581 (+5) was seven shots in front of Oregon (588, +12). Minnesota was third at 591 (+15) and Michigan State and Northwestern were tied for fourth at 597 (+21). In sixth place was Washington at 598 (+22), followed by Oregon State at 604 (+28) and Wisconsin at 613 (+37).

Seniors Kevin Chappell and Craig Leslie carried the Bruins on Sunday. After posting an even par 72 in the first round, Chappell torched the inward nine on the 7,401-yard links-style layout with a cool 30 (-6). He carded four birdies and an eagle on the back nine for a five-under par 67, and was the second round leader at five-under 142. Leslie was tied for second at two-under 142 after posting rounds of 70-72. Sophomore Jason Kang was tied for 10th at 148 (+4) after carding rounds of 73-75 and junior Lucas Lee was tied for 28th at 153 (+9) following rounds of 80-73. Freshman Connor Driscoll was tied for 45th at 157 (+13) after rounds of 79-78.

Four UCLA players competed as individuals. Junior Erik Flores was in ninth place at three-over par through 15 holes of the second round. He posted a 69 (-3) in the first round. Junior James Lee was tied for 28th at 153 (+9) after carding rounds of 77-76. Freshman Philip Francis was tied for 39th at 156 following rounds of 73-80, and sophomore Ben Choe was tied for 50th at 14-over par through 33 holes.
