LOS ANGELES - For the first time in 15 years, the fourth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team didn't surrender a single point to Stanford, registering a 7-0 victory over the 19th-ranked Cardinal at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Saturday. With the win, UCLA improves to 5-0 on the season, while Stanford drops to 0-3.
UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel clinched the doubles point for the Bruins at court No. 1, posting an 8-6 victory over Matt Bruch and Richard Wire. That win was preceded by an 8-4 victory by UCLA's Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol at court No. 2.
The Bruins continued to dominate in singles play, moving out to a 3-0 lead in just over an hour. Kohlloeffel turned in his usual performance at the No. 1 position, downing Bruch, 6-2, 6-1. That win was followed up by Jeremy Drean at court No. 6, as he was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Jeff Zeller.
Gruendler clinched the win for the Bruins at court No. 5, recording a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kevin Kaiser. Mathieu Dehaine and Surapol also posted straight-set wins for UCLA.
UCLA's last shutout over Stanford was a 6-0 decision back in 1992.
The closest match of the day came at court No. 2, where Abid needed a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set to defeat Wire, 6-4, 4-6, (10-8).
Next up for UCLA is a trip to Waco, Texas for a meeting with the second-ranked Baylor Bears on Feb. 10.
