SEATTLE - The UCLA men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the 10th straight year on Friday, as the eighth-seeded Bruins posted a 4-0 victory over ninth-seeded Notre Dame at the Seattle Tennis Club. Next up for UCLA (6-0) is a showdown with top-seeded Virginia (8-0) on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Cavaliers advanced with a 4-0 victory over Penn State in the opening round.
Despite dropping the opening doubles match at court No. 1, UCLA battled back to take the next two matches and eventually claim a 1-0 lead in the match. Jeremy Drean and Michael Look clinched the point for the Bruins at court No. 3, posting an 8-6 win over Tyler Davis/Santiago Montoya.
UCLA took control once singles play began, as Drean made the score 2-0 following his 6-4, 6-2 win over Dan Stahl at court No. 5. Look followed suit moments later at court No. 4, as he downed Stephen Havens, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Holden Seguso clinched the match for the Bruins at court No. 3, taking a 6-2, 6-4 win over Andrew Roth.
UCLA was leading comfortably in two of the three remaining singles matches that were suspended, as Harel Srugo was up 5-3 in the third set at court No. 1, and Nick Meister, after winning the first set, was up 4-0 at court No. 6.
UCLA leads the all-time series with Virginia, 2-1. The Bruins and Cavaliers last met during the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2005, a 4-1 UCLA win.
