Box Score

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a two-run home run, junior Amanda Kamekona went 3-for-4 and senior Anjelica Selden struck out seven in a four-hitter, as the fifth-ranked Bruins topped #10 Baylor 6-1 on Saturday at the Palm Springs Classic.

The Bruins (11-2) play again at approximately 9 p.m. on Saturday against 14th-ranked Hawai'i.

UCLA scored twice in the top of the first to improve to 10-0 on the season when crossing home plate in its first at-bat. With one out, Kamekona doubled to right-center and moved to third on a single to center by senior Krista Colburn. After a walk to DiSalvatore loaded the bases, freshman Samantha Camuso got the Bruins on the board with a single to right to plate Kamekona. With the bases still loaded, freshman Monica Harrison got an RBI the hard way, getting hit by a pitch to score Colburn and put the Bruins up 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Lady Bears rallied with two outs when Alex Colyer singled and Megan Weldon drove her in with a double down the left-field line. But the Bruins got that run back in the top of the third. DiSalvatore was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single up the middle by Camuso to make it 3-1 UCLA.

The Bruins extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the fifth. DiSalvatore tripled to center to start off the inning and came home two batters later on a sacrifice fly to right by junior Jennifer Schroeder.

In the bottom of the inning, DiSalvatore made a play worthy of a Web Gem on Baseball Tonight. With two outs, Nicole Wesley slapped a ball to first. DiSalvatore dove to her right, gloved the chopper and on the ground flipped behind her back to a covering Kamekona at first to record the out.

In the seventh, DiSalvatore came through again. Colburn doubled to left-center to start off and DiSalvatore roped her second home run of the season to right to put the Bruins ahead 6-1.

Selden didn't allow a runner past second base after the second inning and improved to 6-1 on the season. Camuso and Colburn also added two hits apiece, with Camuso driving in two and Colburn scoring twice.

Colyer had two hits for the Lady Bears (7-3). Kirsten Shortridge tossed six-plus innings and gave up six runs, 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Brittany Turner retired all three batters she faced in the seventh inning, striking out a batter.
