Fourth-ranked UCLA defeated No. 5 Pepperdine in the 31st annual Kilgour Cup Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion

The Bruins (9-4, 6-3) won 30-28, 30-24, 22-30, 30-26 in two hours and three minutes in front of 845 spectators. The Waves, who have lost five of their last six matches, are now 5-5 overall and in conference play. UCLA's victory was its 25th Kilgour Cup title and marked the eighth time the Bruins have defeated Pepperdine for the crown.

The victory also enabled UCLA to keep pace with Cal State Northridge in the MPSF race. The Matadors defeated Stanford Saturday creating a third place tie with the Bruins at 6-3.

Against the Waves, junior Sean O'Malley slammed 18 kills (.300) and recorded 20 points, both career highs. Sophomore Garrett Muagututia also spiked 18 kills (.314) and added four total blocks for 21.5 points. Other players recording double-digit kills were Ryan Ratelle with 11 and D.J. Stromath with 10. Senior Tony Ker recorded 19 digs.

Cory Riecks led Pepperdine with 24 kills (.385) and Matt McKee added 16 (.306).

The Bruins embark on a six-match road trip for the rest of the month that will take them from Honolulu to Muncie, IN and back to Los Angeles. The Bruins' next home match is Tues., Mar. 4 vs. Lewis.
