LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Senior Anjelica Selden struck out seven and tossed her second straight one-hitter, outdueling Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher, as the second-ranked Bruins defeated the 24th-ranked Hokies 1-0 on Friday at the Long Beach State Invitational at Mayfair Park.
The Bruins, who improve to 21-2 with their 15th-straight victory, face Notre Dame in their second game of the day at approximately 4:45 p.m. The Hokies fall to 12-7 with the loss.
Selden allowed just two base runners on a leadoff walk to Beth Walker in the third and a two-out single to Erin Ota in the sixth. The walk by Selden was her first in 41 1/3 innings, as the senior improved to 11-1 on the season.
UCLA got the only run it would need in the bottom of the third inning, rallying with two outs. After a walk to freshman Katie Schroeder, junior Amanda Kamekona tapped a ball to third, but Charisse Mariconda bobbled it to prolong the inning. Senior Krista Colburn cashed in the error, singling to center to score Schroeder and make it 1-0.
Colburn had two of the three hits off Tincher, while Kamekona had the other one. Tincher struck out 15, giving up an unearned run and a walk in six innings.
Selden retired the first six batters of the game, and after the walk in the third, set down 11 straight until the single in the sixth.
