TUCSON, Ariz. - Seventh-ranked Arizona pounded out five doubles and scored five in the third and three in the sixth to defeat #1 UCLA 8-0 in six innings on Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Bruins fall to 35-5 overall and 7-2 in Pac-10 play, while the Wildcats improve to 29-11 and 6-3 in league action.
UCLA had six hits. Juniors Amanda Kamekona and Jennifer Schroeder and freshman Samantha Camuso each had doubles, while sophomore Julie Burney and freshmen GiOnna DiSalvatore and Katie Schroeder had singles.
Freshman Donna Kerr (13-2) started in the circle, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing four runs, two hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Sophomore Megan Langenfeld tossed the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up four runs, five hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
A five-run third was the backbreaker for UCLA, as the Bruins for the second game in a row surrendered runs with two outs in the inning. Brittany Lastrapes walked to start off the inning, but Kerr struck out Lauren Schutzler for the first out. After Jenae Leles was hit by a pitch, Stacie Chambers grounded out to first to move Lastrapes and Schutzler up a base and Sam Banister drove them both in on a double to left to put Arizona up 2-0. Another double by Callista Balko to left-center scored Banister to make it 3-0.
That would be the end of the day for Kerr, who was relieved by Langenfeld. The sophomore hurler walked the first batter she faced, Laine Roth. K'Lee Arredondo then followed with a double to center, driving in Balko and Roth to raise the Wildcats' lead to 5-0.
The Wildcats invoked the mercy rule in the sixth. Roth led off with a double to right-center and was pinch-run for by Jill Malina. A double by Arredondo plated Malina to make it 6-0. Arredondo would catch the Bruins napping, stealing third, and the Wildcats put runners at the corners on a slap single by Adrienne Acton. Acton then stole second, and when the throw went into center field, Arredondo scored to make it 7-0. Lastrapes closed out the game, singling to left-center to score Acton and give the Wildcats the mercy-rule victory.
Sarah Akamine (2-0) pitched six shutout innings, giving up six hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Arredondo had a pair of hits for the Wildcats, who had seven as a team.
The Bruins conclude their Arizona road trip on Sunday when they face the Wildcats at 12 p.m. Gametracker will be available at www.UCLABruins.com.
