Golfers Trail by Two after Round One at NCAA Championship

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team was in second place following the opening round at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, hosted at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD.
The Bruins posted a team score of 296 (+8) and were two shots behind the University of Denver (294, +6). In third place was North Carolina at 299 (+11), followed by USC at 301 (+13). Tied for fifth were top-ranked Arizona State and LSU at 302 (+14). Wake Forest and Oklahoma State were tied for seventh at 303 (+15) and Viginia and Alabama were tied for ninth at 305 (+19).
All five UCLA players were within three strokes of par on Tuesday. The Bruins also enjoyed a field day at the 17th hole, playing the par 5, 454-yarder in four-under par. Junior Sydnee Michaels eagled it and sophomore Maria Jose Uribe and freshman Stephanie Kono made birdies there.
Kono posted the Bruins' best score of the day -- a one-over par 73 -- that put her in a tie for seventh. Her birdie at the 17th was the third of three straight after she had played the first 14 holes in four-over par.
Sophomore Glory Yang and senior Tiffany Joh were tied for 12th after posting scores of 74 (+2). Joh birdied the first hole, bogeyed No. 6 and birdied the seventh for a one-under 35 on the outward nine. Three bogeys on the second nine gave her a 39 (+3). Yang made two birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey at the sixth.
Uribe and Michaels each carded scores of 75 (+3) and were tied for 25th. Uribe made five bogeys and two birdies; Michaels recorded seven bogeys and two birdies in addition to her eagle.
North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell and Denver's Stephanie Sherlock were tied for first at two-under par 70 following the first round.
The Bruins will tee off Wednesday at 4:30 a.m. PDT.
