The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team staked an 11-stroke first round lead Thursday at the NCAA Central Regional at the Ohio State Scarlet Course in Columbus.

The Bruins posted a team score of four-under par 284 and led second place Michigan State and Purdue (295, +7). In fourth place at nine-over par 297 was Oklahoma State, and Wake Forest was fifth at 298 (+10). Stanford, the only other Pac-10 team in this regional, was tied for 14th place at 310 (+22).

Following 54 holes of stroke play, the top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship, May 19-22. The East and West Regionals also will send eight teams.

Three players were eight-under par for the Bruins: sophomore Maria Jose Uribe, freshman Stephanie Kono and junior Sydnee Michaels. Kono and Uribe were tied for first place at three-under par 69, and Michaels was third at 70 (-2). Kono birdied three of her final five holes en route to a score of three-under par 33 on the inward nine. Uribe bogeyed the first hole, birdied her next three, and made 12 straight pars before making birdie at the 17th. Michaels, two over at the turn after a double-bogey, bogey stretch on eight and nine, made four birdies on the inward nine, including a pair on her last two holes.

Surprisingly, two of the Bruins' most consistent players -- senior Tiffany Joh and sophomore Glory Yang -- were 10-over par. Yang was tied for 30th at 76 (+4) and Joh was tied for 58th at 78 (+6).
