Senior Marci Bernholtz has injury retired and will stay in the gymnastics program as an undergraduate assistant coach for the 2011 season.
Bernholtz has had difficulties fully recovering from knee surgery she had prior to arriving at UCLA but worked diligently to perform to the best of her abilities. She competed three times on uneven bars and twice on balance beam a year ago, and in 2009, she competed nine times on beam and three times on bars and earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors. During her freshman season, she earned Pac-10 Event Specialist of the Week honors after winning the balance beam with a career-high 9.875. Bernholtz was a two-time World Championships competitor for Canada and the 2007 Canadian Uneven Bars champion.
"It was a hard decision for us and Marci to make," said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. "It became clear over the past few years that her knee would not get any better and was definitely preventing her from being able to execute her gymnastics skills as she would have liked to."
"Marci is now doing a great job for us as an undergraduate assistant coach," Kondos Field continued. "Her technical knowledge and rapport she has with the team are priceless."
