Zamarripa, Larson To Compete At CoverGirl Classic

UCLA rising junior Vanessa Zamarripa and signee Mattie Larson are amongst a strong field of participants at the 2010 CoverGirl Classic, which will take place July 24 at the UIC Pavilion on the University of Illinois-Chicago campus.
Both Zamarripa and Larson will compete in the senior session, which begins at 7 p.m. and will air live on Universal Sports.
Zamarripa, who hails from O'Fallon, IL, will be competing at her first CoverGirl Classic. She qualified for the meet, as well as the U.S. Championship meet in Hartford, CT (Aug. 10-14), by achieving a score of over 54.0 at the National Elite Qualifier in June. The 2010 Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year had an outstanding sophomore season, winning the NCAA vault championship and the Pac-10 and NCAA Regional all-around titles while leading the Bruins to a postseason sweep that culminated in UCLA winning its sixth NCAA team championship.
Larson, a Los Angeles native who signed a letter-of-intent last November, has a pair of Top 5 all-around finishes at the Classic to her credit, placing third in the junior division in 2007 and fifth in 2006. She was seventh at the U.S. Championships and Olympic Trials in 2008 and took home first place finishes on beam and floor at the 2009 World Cup in Montreal.
