UCLA signee Mattie Larson won the all-around, and Bruin junior Vanessa Zamarripa tied for seventh at the 2010 CoverGirl Classic on Saturday evening in Chicago.
Larson, who signed a national letter-of-intent with UCLA last fall, took first place with an all-around score of 57.150. She also earned a second-place finish on floor exercise (14.600) and a fourth-place finish on vault (14.700).
Zamarripa, the reigning Pac-10 all-around and NCAA vault champion, tied with Morgan Smith for seventh place in the all-around (55.100) in her first major elite competition. Zamarripa also tied for fifth on uneven bars (14.550) and tied for sixth on vault (14.500).
"Our goal with Vanessa for her first Elite meet was to hit clean, beautiful gymnastics and to thoroughly enjoy the experience. Mission Accomplished," said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. "We could not be more happy for Mattie Larson. She has battled back from months of injury and rehab and is stronger and more beautiful than ever. Both Mattie and Vanessa bring out the artistry in 'Artistic Gymnastics'."
Both Larson and Zamarripa will compete at the 2010 Visa Championships, USA Gymnastics' national championships, on Aug. 10-14 in Hartford, CT.
