The No. 4 ranked UCLA Bruins were defeated by the No.1 ranked USC Trojans 3-1 in a back-and-forth match that saw 34 ties and 12 lead changes.

The Bruins drop to 7-3 on the year and are now 2-2 in MPSF play while USC remains undefeated at 6-0 in both overall and conference play. Game scores were 25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 25-16.

UCLA got off to a very slow start as the Trojans jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first set. But the Bruins fought back to push it to 22-20 before USC prevailed 25-22. The second set was very competitive as both sides kept pushing the other until eventually the score got to 23-23. Then Thomas Amberg hammered home a kill and assisted on a block with Kyle Caldwell to even the match at one apiece.

The Bruins were looking to take control of the match as they led 22-20 going into the homestretch of the 3rd set. But a Tony Ciarelli kill and back-to-back attack errors by Gonzalo Quiroga and Amberg gave the Trojans the lead. From there USC would go on to take the 3rd set and ultimately the fourth as well.

Junior Weston Dunlap did his best to will UCLA to victory, as he led the team with 13 kills (1.000) on the night. Amberg was right behind him with 12 kills (.391) while Quiroga added 9 kills and a team leading 9 digs. Junior Ryal Jagd also played admirably in the loss, recording 6 kills and 6 digs.

Overall, the Trojans hit .347 as a team while the Bruins managed to hit just .214. USC also outblocked UCLA 14.5 to 7. Murphy Troy led USC with 4 aces, all of which happened in the final set, and 26 kills.

UCLA is set to hit the road next week as they will take on the BYU Cougars on Friday, February 4th in Provo, UT. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m. PT. Last year, the two teams split the regular season series 1-1 but the Cougars went on to end UCLA's season in the MPSF Quarterfinals with a 3-1 win.
