Los Angeles, Calif. - Junior Ryan Hollingshead scored his first goal of the season while senior captain Andy Rose scored his second goal in as many games to lead the No. 16/25 UCLA men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the Stanford Cardinal on Sunday afternoon.
The Bruins improved to 7-3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the conference while the Cardinal dropped to 3-6-1 on the year and 0-2 in Pac-12 play.
After a scoreless first half, UCLA got on the board early in the 52nd minute, when Eder Arreola sent a through ball in the penalty box to Hollingshead, who took one touch and fired a low liner past Stanford keeper Jason Dodson to the near post. Just seven minutes later, Hollingshead was at it again, drawing a foul in the penalty box to give the Bruins a penalty kick. Andy Rose lined up to take the penalty and put the ball in the top left-hand corner to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. The Bruins kept the Cardinal at bay for the rest of the match and went on to win their second straight Pac-12 game by the score of 2-0.
Goalie Brian Rowe made two saves to earn his second consecutive shutout while Dodson made seven saves for the Cardinal. Overall, UCLA outshot Stanford 15-8.
UCLA will next travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Washington Huskies on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 pm and the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 pm.
