The UCLA men's golf team was in second place after the opening round of the Gifford Collegiate Championship Monday at the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, CA.
The Bruins posted a first round score of 348 (-7) and trailed frontrunner USC (345, -10), by three shots. Virginia was third at 365 (E), followed by Washington at 359 (+4) and fifth-place Oregon at 362 (+7).
UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay set a single round tournament record by firing an eight-under par 63 to take the opening round lead. Cantlay, the defending champion at this event, went out in five-under par 30 and came in at three-under par 33. He had just 27 putts, including seven one-putts to start the day and a total of 11 on the front nine. He hit 12 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation. At the second hole, he stiffed a 7-iron to one foot for birdie. He led USC's Steve Lim (65) by three shots.
UCLA senior Alex Shi To listen to a Yup Kim and junior Pedro Figueiredo were tied for ninth place at one-under par 70. Sophomore Anton Arboleda was tied for 17th at even par 71. Junior Pontus Widegren was tied for 31st after carding a 74 (+3) and junior Mario Clemens was tied for 54th at 77 (+6). Tournament format is five-out-six scoring.
UCLA also featured three players competing as individuals. Freshman Matt Pinizzotto posted the best score in this group, signing for an even par 71, tied for 17th. Freshman Jay Hwang was tied for 31st after posting a 74 (+3) and junior Bobby Lange was tied for 62nd at 78 (+6).
