Charlottesville, Va. - After falling in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors on Friday, the No. 7 UCLA women's tennis team defeated No. 9 Miami, 4-2 on Saturday in a consolation match at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
UCLA (7-3) was forced to rally in Saturday's contest after dropping the doubles point. The point was clinched at court No. 2, where Miami's Melissa Bolivar and Gabriela Mejia notched an 8-5 victory over Noelle Hickey and McCall Jones to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
Despite the early setback, the Bruins dominated singles play, winning four matches, three of them in straight sets. Wins by Pamela Montez (court No. 5), Remynse (court No. 3) and Courtney Dolehide (court No. 4) gave UCLA a 3-2 lead. The match was eventually clinched at court No. 6, where Maya Johansson was a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 winner over Bistra Otashliyska.
Miami's lone point in singles came at court No. 1, where 10th-ranked Bianca Eichkorn was a 6-4, 6-4, winner over 96th-ranked McCall Jones.
UCLA continues consolation action at the Indoors on Sunday, facing Baylor at 9:00 a.m.
