Right-hander Zack Weiss (1-0) secured his first career victory, tossing 3.1 hitless innings in relief. Weiss recorded four strikeouts and walked three batters in relief of starting pitcher Scott Griggs.

Amaral joined Cody Keefer, Steve Rodriguez and Tyler Rahmatulla as the only Bruins to collect at least two hits in the win at San Diego State (1-6). Keefer went 2-for-3 with one run, Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with one double and two RBI, and Rahmatulla went 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI.

The Bruins got on the board with one run in the first inning. With runners at second and third base, Dean Espy lined a one-hopper that bounced off the glove of shortstop Corey Black for a fielding error, allowing Jeff Gelalich to score.

San Diego State tied the contest, 1-1, with two outs and runners at the corners in the bottom of the second. Corey Black lined a double to the gap in left-center field, allowing Jomel Torres to score from third base.

The Bruins claimed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. With runners at the corners and one out, Amaral reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Adrian Williams to score as Jeff Gelalich was forced out at second base.

A two-run double to left field by Rodriguez in the top of the fifth pushed UCLA ahead, 4-1. With Keefer at third base and Rahmatulla at first, Rodriguez lifted a line drive that grazed over the head of left fielder Dillon Bryant, allowing both baserunners to score.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the ninth, San Diego State scored on a run-scoring groundout by Black.
