No. 24 UCLA Baseball Earns 10-3 Victory at Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. - Right-hander Trevor Bauer pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out 15 batters and walking two, to lead the No. 24 UCLA baseball team past Washington State, 10-3, in a Pac-10 game at Bailey-Brayton Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win helped UCLA (16-10, 7-1 Pac-10) clinch the series over Washington State (12-14, 1-7 Pac-10), with Sunday's series finale slated for 12 p.m.
Cody Regis led the Bruins' 15-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with one double, four RBI and one run, while Steve Rodriguez also went 3-for-5. Jeff Gelalich, Beau Amaral and Dean Espy each went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Gelalich, Amaral and Pat Valaika each scored two runs.
Bauer (6-1) earned the victory by firing his seventh career complete game, tying the school record for career wins (27, Alex Sanchez). He allowed three runs and six hits in nine innings, reaching the 15-strikeout plateau for the third time in his career. Bauer extended his school record-leading career strikeout total to 354.
Eight of UCLA's nine starters in the batting lineup recorded at least one hit, while Cody Keefer drew two walks.
Washington State left-hander Richie Ochoa (3-1) absorbed the loss, allowing two runs and two hits in one inning of relief. Right-hander Chad Arnold allowed three runs and five hits, surrendering five walks, through the first five innings as the Cougars' starting pitcher.
UCLA broke open a 3-3 tie with a four-run seventh inning before adding three runs in the top of the ninth.
After Washington State tied the game, 3-3, with a two-run sixth, the Bruins plated four runs with nobody out in the top of the seventh. Valaika opened the frame with a double down the left-field line. A triple to the gap in left-center field by Gelalich scored Valaika. Amaral followed with a line-drive single into center field, sending home Gelalich. A double to right field by Espy pushed Amaral to third base, and both baserunners scored on a double by Regis that hit the top of the fence in right field.
In UCLA's three-run ninth, Chris Giovinazzo had a run-scoring double, Trevor Brown lined a run-scoring double down the left field line and Rodriguez hammered an RBI-single into center field.
Washington State got on the board first, as Tommy Richards belted a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
UCLA scored three runs in the top of the fifth to lead, 3-1. With the bases loaded and one out, Espy lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, deep enough to score Valaika. On a 2-and-0 count, Regis lifted a pop fly into foul territory off the third-base line that was blown away from the grasp of Washington State third baseman Matt Argyropoulous. Regis drove a two-run single through the right side of the infield on the next pitch, handing the Bruins a two-run cushion.
The Cougars tied the ballgame, 3-3, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brett Jacobs drew a one-out walk and scored from first base on a double by Taylor Aard. With two outs, Argyropoulos lifted a fly ball double down the right-field line that fell in front of Giovinazzo, just inside the foul line, allowing Ard to score.
UCLA concludes its Pac-10 series at Washington State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Game Notes: UCLA has won 15 of its last 17 Pac-10 road games, dating back to the start of 2010 ... the Bruins secured their first series victory at Washington State since 2005 ... Trevor Bauer has tallied at least 10 strikeouts in seven of his eight starts ... Bauer has earned the victory in each of his last four starts, improving to 3-0 in Pac-10 play ... Cody Regis extended his hitting streak to a season-long seven games ... UCLA has not opened its Pac-10 schedule with a 7-1 start since 2007 (opened 10-1 in Pac-10 play that season) ... Bauer moved into seventh place on UCLA's career innings list (301.0), one inning shy of Tim Lindsay (302.0).
