LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Trevor Bauer hurled his seventh consecutive complete game, his eighth of the season, striking out eight batters to lead the UCLA baseball team past California, 2-1, in a Pac-10 game at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium before 1,379 on Saturday afternoon.
Bauer (11-2) earned the victory, limiting the Golden Bears (30-17, 13-10) to one run and five hits. The junior from Valencia, Calif., issued just one walk in his 13th career complete game and moved into fourth place on the Pac-10 Conference's single-season strikeouts list (175).
The game ended in dramatic fashion, as California stranded the potential tying-run at second base. Tony Renda reached on a leadoff single in the top of the ninth and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Bauer struck out Chad Bunting on a full count before inducing a hard groundball off the bat of Devon Rodriguez. The grounder was stopped at first base by Dean Espy and picked up by second baseman Trevor Brown, who flipped the ball to Bauer covering first base.
UCLA (30-20, 15-8) remained in third place in the Pac-10 standings, two games behind Oregon State and one game shy of Arizona State. The Bruins reached the 30-win plateau for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
California right-hander Dixon Anderson (4-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs (one earned) and six hits through 5.2 innings. Logan Scott held the Bruins hitless through 2.1 innings in relief.
The Bruins scored one run in the bottom of the first inning after loading the bases. Cody Keefer grounded into a double play, allowing Jeff Gelalich to score from third base.
In the bottom of the third, Espy drew a walk, advanced to third base on a double by Keefer and scored on Cody Regis' ensuing sacrifice fly to center field.
The Golden Bears sliced UCLA's lead in half with a solo home run by Bunting in the top of the fifth.
UCLA concludes its Pac-10 series against California on Sunday. The Bruins' final regular-season home will begin at 1 p.m. Prior to Sunday's ballgame, UCLA will honor five seniors as part of the annual "Senior Day" ceremony.
Game Notes: With his 13th career complete game on Saturday, Trevor Bauer moved into a tie for fourth place on UCLA's all-time list (with Tim Lindsay) ... Bauer now ranks second on UCLA's single-season complete games list (eight) ... UCLA has held its opponent to one run or fewer in 18 games this season ... Bauer has limited the opposition to five hits or fewer in 10 of his 14 starts.
