IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 23 UCLA baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 24 UC Irvine, 2-1, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark. Right-hander Zack Weiss allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings and absorbed the loss.

Weiss (5-3) retired the first 12 consecutive hitters in order before surrendering a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. The freshman from Irvine, Calif., finished with four strikeouts and one walk for UCLA (31-21).

UC Irvine snapped a 1-1 tie on a run-scoring groundout with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Anteaters (38-14) loaded the bases with one out, before Sean Madigan grounded a ball 15 feet in front of home plate. Catcher Tyler Heineman fielded the slow grounder and fired to first base for the out, as pinch-runner Dillon Moyer scored from third.

Left-hander Andy Lines (5-2) earned the victory in relief, throwing one-third of a scoreless inning. Right-hander B rian Hernandez notched his team-leading 12th save for UC Irvine, recording all three outs in the top of the ninth.

Cody Regis and Dean Espy were the only players in the game to record at least two hits. Regis went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a leadoff single to right field in the top of the ninth. Espy went 2-for-3 with two singles.

UCLA got on the board with Regis' two-out solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.

UC Irvine tied the contest, 1-1, on a run-scoring groundout by Jordan Leyland in the bottom of the fifth. Leyland's grounder to first base scored Jordan Fox, who reached base on a hit-by-pitch.

The Bruins close their regular-season schedule with a three-game Pac-10 series at No. 8 Arizona State (38-14, 16-8) this weekend. The Bruins play in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Game Notes: Cody Regis' solo home run in the top of the fourth was the fifth home run allowed by UC Irvine in 25 games at Anteater Ballpark this season ... Zack Weiss made his eight start of the season ... Dean Espy recorded his team-leading 20th multiple-hit game of the season ... Cody Regis pushed his team lead in home runs to five.
