UCLA Baseball Earns 10-0 Victory at Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - Right-hander Zack Weiss struck out a season-high seven batters through six scoreless innings to lead the UCLA baseball team past Pepperdine, 10-0, at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bruins (24-16) notched their eighth shutout of the season as eight of their 10 runs were unearned.
After each team stranded eight baserunners through the first five innings, UCLA plated eight unearned runs in the sixth through eighth innings. The Bruins added two in the sixth, four in the seventh, and two in the eighth and ninth.
Weiss (5-1) recorded the victory for the fourth consecutive midweek start, scattering seven hits in six scoreless frames. He walked two batters and lowered his earned-run average to a 1.99 mark. Right-hander Brandon Lodge allowed two hits in a career-high two scoreless innings, and right-hander Scott Griggs surrendered one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
Dean Espy led the Bruins at the plate, going 3-for-6 with one double and one run. Cody Regis went 1-for-5 with an inside-the-park home run, two runs and two RBI, and Cody Keefer went 1-for-2 with one double, two runs and two RBI.
Left-hander Matt Maurer (3-5) absorbed the loss for Pepperdine (18-21), allowing two runs (both unearned) and five hits in six innings.
UCLA claimed a 2-0 lead with a two-run double to left-center field by Gelalich in the top of the sixth. With runners at first and second base, Gelalich drilled a pitch to the left field gap, driving home Keefer and Adrian Williams.
The Bruins took advantage of a two-out throwing error by Pepperdine shortstop Zach Vincej in the top of the seventh by scoring four unearned runs with two outs. With runners at first and second base, Tyler Heineman's grounder to shortstop was overthrown on a flip to second base, allowing Espy to score from second base. Heineman advanced to second base on the play and Regis moved from first to third. Keefer followed with a two-run double to right field, and pinch-hitter Marc Navarro lined a run-scoring double down the right field line.
In the eighth inning, Beau Amaral reached on a fielding error by first baseman Sam Meyer. Two batters later, Regis belted a fly ball to right field that short-hopped the outfield fence. Pepperdine right fielder Harrison Kain injured himself by slamming hard against the wall before crumpling to the ground, allowing Regis to round the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run.
UCLA added two runs in the ninth inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Brian Carroll that scored Brenton Allen, before Beau Amaral was hit by a pitch, sending home Kevin Williams.
The Bruins return to action with a three-game Pac-10 series at Oregon beginning Friday, May 6. Game time of the series opener is 5 p.m. Saturday's game is at 5 p.m., while Sunday's series finale has moved to a 12 p.m. first pitch. Game Notes: Zack Weiss has gone 4-0 in each of the Bruins' last four midweek starts (Long Beach State, San Diego State, UC Irvine and Pepperdine) ... Dean Espy logged his team-leading 14th multiple-hit game of the year (four three-hit efforts in 2011) ... Cody Regis' inside-the-park home run was UCLA's first since Brandon Crawford had an inside-the-park homer in the second game of a doubleheader at Long Beach State (Blair Field) on March 22, 2008 ... UCLA outscored Pepperdine, 19-0, in both victories over the Waves this season ... the Bruins improved to 6-2 this season in midweek games and finished their regular-season schedule with a perfect 6-0 mark against opponents from the West Coast Conference.
