LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to UC Irvine in the final game of the NCAA Los Angeles Regional before 1,461 at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday night, ending its season with a 35-24 record.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth as the designated home team, UC Irvine scored two runs to win the game in walkoff fashion. Ronnie Shaeffer lined the game-winning single down the right field line with nobody out, scoring pinch-runner Scott Gottschling from third base.
The Anteaters (42-16) opened the ninth inning with Christian Ramirez drawing a leadoff walk on a full count against UCLA starter Zack Weiss. Freshman right-hander Nick Vander Tuig entered the game, and Jordan Leyland lined a double to left field, scoring pinch-runner Dillon Moyer from first base. Tommy Reyes reached safely on a bunt single to third base, pushing the pinch-runner Gottschling to third base. Shaeffer followed with the game-winning hit before earning Most Outstanding Player honors on the All-NCAA Los Angeles Regional Team.

UCLA was led at the plate by Cody Keefer (2-for-5), Beau Amaral (2-for-4) and Jeff Gelalich, who went 1-for-5 with one homer and two RBI. Gelalich connected with a solo blast, his second round-tripper of the season, on the second at-bat of the ballgame to give the Bruins a 1-0 cushion.
The Bruins doubled their margin with a run-scoring fielder's choice by Gelalich, who scored Tyler Heineman from third on the second out of the fourth inning.
UCLA added one run in the top of the fifth inning, extending its cushion to 3-0. Cody Regis opened the frame with a single and stole second base. After moving to third on a groundout, Regis scored on a single through the left side of the infield by Heineman.
UC Irvine scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, reducing the Bruins' lead to 3-2.
UCLA finished its season with a 35-24 record after having captured the Pac-10 Championship in outright fashion for the first time since 1986.
