For the second time this year, freshman Alec Faldermeyer has earned All-American honors, this time in the hammer at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, IA. Faldermeyer came into the meet with the seventh-best mark in the NCAA (223-9) and placed fifth on Thursday with a solid toss of 221-8 to earn USTFCCCA first-team All-America honors. He picks up UCLA's eighth All-American honor in the event. The last Bruin All-American honor in the hammer was in 2008 when Boldizsar Kocsor placed fourth.

The frosh opened up the competition with a throw of 210-8, which put him in sixth-place. On his second attempt, he improved to 217-8 and fifth-place. He continued his improvements in the third round as he notched a throw of 219-8 for a fourth-place standing heading into the finals. In the finals, he upped his best throw again with a toss of 221-4 to move back into fourth after being knocked to fifth by LSU's Michael Lauro. He fouled his fifth throw and ended the competition with a final throw of 219-7. He finished fifth overall and was the highest placing freshman in the hammer competition. Three of the four men ahead of him were seniors and there were only two freshmen in all competing in the hammer today. Faldermeyer also picks up UCLA's first team points of the meet, earning four towards the Bruins team total.

Faldermeyer's season does not end at NCAAs as he will compete at the USATF Junior National Championships in Eugene, OR in two weeks (June 23-26.). The freshman will be looking to qualify for the PanAm Junior Team at that meet.

Sophomore Maxwell Dyce, running out of lane two in heat three of the 200m, finished seventh in his heat and 19th overall in a time of 21.04. He does not advance, but does earn USTFCCCA Honorable Mention All-America honors for his effort.

On Friday, senior Cory Primm will be the sole competitor for the Bruins as he races for the first outdoor 800m crown in Bruin history. His race is slated to run at 5:20 pm.
