UCLA Builds Lead at Gifford Collegiate Championship

Host UCLA maintained its lead at the eighth annual Gifford Collegiate Championship on Tuesday at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif.
The Bruins posted a team score of 349 (-6) for a two-round total of 699 (-11) in the six-count-five format, and held a nine-shot lead over Stanford (708, -2). The Bruins' second round team score was the lowest of the day. Tennessee was third at 716 (+6), followed by fourth-place USC at 718 (+8). Northwestern held the fifth spot at 720 (+10), Lamar was sixth at 726 (+16) and SMU was seventh at 728 (+18). In eighth place was Coastal Carolina at 733 (+23), followed by San Jose State at 737 (+27) and Oregon State at 739 (+29).
Individually, senior Pontus Widegren was still UCLA's top finisher, posting a second round score of 69 (-2) for a 36-hole total of 137 (-5). Tied for fifth place was freshman Lorens Chan at 139 (-3) following a score of 68 (-3) on Tuesday. Sophomore Manav Shah posted a 72 (+1) in the second round and was in eighth place at 141 (-1). Three players were tied for 22nd at two-over par 144: senior Pedro Figueiredo, who posted an even par 71, sophomore Matt Pinizzotto who carded a 75 (+4) and freshman Jonathan Garrick who fired a 69 (-2).
Five other UCLA players competed as individuals, led by sophomores Jay Hwang and Preston Valder who were tied for fifth place at 139 (-3). Valder posted a three-under par 69 and Hwang added an even par 71. Freshmen Jake Knapp, Reilly McMahon and Aaron Kunitomo were tied for 50th, 54th and 66th, respectively.
Stanford's Cameron Wilson remained in the lead with a 36-hole total of 135 (-7), despite a second round score of 74 (+3).
