Sparked by sophomore Anton Arboleda's hot putter, fifth-seeded UCLA was tied for fourth place after the opening round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship Tuesday at Riviera Country Club.

Alabama held the first round lead at 285 (+1), followed by Florida and Auburn in a tie for second place at 288 (+4). The Bruins were tied with Oklahoma at 289 (+5).

Arboleda played the outward nine in 36 (+1), but eagled the first hole. He carded five birdies on the inward side for a 31 and led the 156-player field with a 67 (-4) after the first day.

"I knew my game was solid," said Arboleda. "Even when I was making bogeys, I just kept hitting good shots. Then I made some putts on the back nine. We've been fortunate playing here so many times and get to dissect and analyze the greens, which is really important."

Sophomore Patrick Cantlay and junior Pedro Figueiredo and Pontus Widegren were tied for 62nd with a large group after posting rounds of 74 (+3). Senior Alex Shi Yup Kim was tied for 98th after signing for a 76 (+5).
