Bruins Climb to Second Place after Day Two at Riviera

Fifth-seeded UCLA climbed the leaderboard Wednesday to second place after round two of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Riviera Country Club.
The Bruins posted a team score of 287 (+3) for a 36-hole total of 576 (+8). They were four shots behind Alabama, which was atop the leaderboard at 572 (+4). Florida State was third at 580 (+12) and Oklahoma and North Florida were tied for fourth at 581 (+13). Washington was sixth at 582 (+14), followed by Liberty at 583 (+15). Four teams, including Cal and USC, were tied for eighth place at 584 (+16).
Following Thursday's round, the top eight teams will advance to match play for three rounds in the knockout bracket.
On Wednesday, the Bruins played the course backwards, teeing off at the 10th hole. Sophomore Anton Arboleda was tied for second place at three-under par 139 following a second round score of 72 (+1). He was one-over on the outward side with a birdie at his ninth hole (No. 18). He made nine straight pars on his inward nine and was tied with Florida's Tyler McCumber. Both players trail Thomas Pieters of Illinois, who was in first place at 137 (-5).
Junior Pedro Figueiredo and sophomore Patrick Cantlay were tied for 37th at four-over par 146. Cantlay began the day with birdies on his first two holes (10 and 11) and finished with a two-over par 73. Figueiredo was one-under par through 11 holes, but consecutive bogeys on his final two holes put him at two-over on the day.
Senior Alex Shi Yup Kim led the Bruins with a score of even par 71 and was tied for 53rd at 147 (+5). Kim made four birdies and four bogeys on the day, including a birdie at his 17th hole (8th).
"I played really solid today, hung in there and battled the entire round to shoot even par," said Kim. "I didn't hit it great, but I made some putts."
Finally, junior Pontus Widegren endured a long morning, making four birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys for a seven-over par round of 78. Widegren was three-over par before he played his last three holes in four-over par. He was tied for 104th at 147 (+5).
In other news: Earlier on Wednesday, the Golf Coaches Assn. announced its annual All-Region teams and UCLA scored five players on the West squad, more than any other school on the West Coast. Arboleda, Cantlay, junior Mario Clemens, Figueiredo and Kim earned All-West Region honors. All of these players are now in contention for GCAA All-America honors.
