The UCLA Men's Golf team emerged triumphant at the Amer Ari Invitational Friday in Waikoloa, HI. The 4th-ranked Bruins scored 285 (-3) in the final round to catch #7 Washington and finish in a tie for first with a total score of 842 (-22). UCLA clinched the victory in a sudden-death playoff, with each Bruin player making par to seal the win after the two teams returned to the 17th hole to determine the tiebreaker.
It was a fitting finish for UCLA. The Bruins, behind after day two, caught up once more with a total team effort. While no player recorded their lowest score of the tournament, UCLA came through in the clutch, finishing two strokes ahead of the Huskies on the day to clinch a first-place tie. Senior leader Pedro Figueiredo led the way, shooting 70 (-2) to climb into an individual tie for 10th. Senior Pontus Widegren and sophomore Jay Hwang followed close behind at 71 (-1) apiece, with Widegren finishing in a four-way tie for 4th atop the player leaderboard. Sophomore Manav Shah carded a 73 (+1), while freshman Lorens Chan counted a 74 (+2) to complete the scoring for the Bruins.
TCU, after starting out strong, never recovered from their rough second day, finishing third for the tourney at 849 (-15), one stroke ahead of Georgia Tech, Texas, and USC in a three-way tie for 4th at 850 (-14).
The win is UCLA's second of the year. The Bruins are back in action Monday, Feb. 18th, at The Prestige tournament hosted by UC Davis at La Quinta.
