1996-97 - Played as an amateur in the U.S. Open at Congressional and won his first collegiate tournament-the Pavin Pioneer Classic … His 75.4 average ranked third on the team, but he was the only Bruin to win an individual title … At the Industry Hills Eisenhower Course he fired a one-under par 70 in U.S. Open local qualifying … A week before the Open, he shot a two-under par 71-69-140 to earn co-medalist honors in sectional qualifying at El Caballero CC … At the Open, his total of 78-76-154 was 14-over par … Later in the summer he tied for sixth at the SCGA Amateur, shooting 69-69-71-74-283 … Also shot 146 at the U.S. Amateur to earn a spot in the match play draw … During the season, he recorded two top 10 finishes, including a tie for sixth at the Stanford Intercollegiates where he shot a 69 in the first round … Fired a pair of 71s in the NCAA West Regionals at Carlton Oaks … Recorded six rounds of par or better.
