Seniors Lead UCLA to 6-0 Win over Arizona on Senior Night

October 18, 2014 | Women's Soccer

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA's star-studded senior class took a final regular season bow at Drake Stadium on Friday night and left a lasting mark with a 6-0 victory over 23rd-ranked Arizona in the team's regular season home finale.

Three Bruin seniors scored four goals, with Sarah Killion recording two goals and an assist, Sam Mewis tallying one goal and two assists, and Caprice Dydasco scoring one goal. Additionally, Ally Courtnall had an assist, and Katelyn Rowland made two saves to earn career shutout No. 47.

All nine seniors started the game, and Kylie McCarthy, making her first start, nearly tallied the first score of the night in the 22nd minute. Rosie White found McCarthy in a perfect spot on the corner kick, and McCarthy's shot was headed for goal but cleared off the line by an Arizona defender. The Bruins kept a relentless attack going, nearly scoring on a curling shot by Taylor Smith that just missed the top left corner in the 31st minute and on a Mewis shot that beat Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman but bounced off the right post straight back to Kaufman for the save in the 34th minute. The Bruins did break through at 36:37 when Smith finished a give-and-go with Mewis to record her fourth goal of the year.

In the second half, the Bruins (13-0-2, 5-0-1 in the Pac-12) scored four times in 10 minutes to break open the game. After Zoey Goralski was taken down in the box, Killion converted the penalty kick to give UCLA a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats (9-4-1, 3-3-0). Mewis worked another give-and-go to set up goal number three. After taking a pass from Dydasco in traffic, Mewis spun to get a free lane and then sent a through ball to Dydasco, whose shot hit the right post and bounced back into the left corner at 51:23. The goal was Dydasco's first of the season.

UCLA scored two goals 36 seconds apart to go ahead 5-0. Killion netted her second goal of the game at 58:56 after taking a pass back from Darian Jenkins and firing past Kaufman. Jenkins got a goal of her own at 59:32 after Courtnall made a long run and slotted a pass for an open Jenkins in the box. Jenkins beat the defender and fired past Kaufman for her fifth goal of the year.

One last senior combination play led to the game's final goal at 88:38, and it was fittingly the team's senior co-captains Mewis and Killion, who rounded out the scoring for the Bruins. Killion played a ball to Mewis, who was making a run into the box, and Mewis finished with precision to score her 10th goal of the year.

“There's so much to say about this senior class that you can't just say it in a couple of words,” said head coach Amanda Cromwell. “It's an amazing class. When we look back in a couple of years, we'll really see the impact they had here, and it's not done yet, which is a great thing.”

The Bruins will be on the road for the final five games of the regular season, starting with a Friday, Oct. 24 matchup at Oregon State.
