LOS ANGELES - Senior Karsta Lowe led the 16th-ranked Bruins with 11 kills, while sophomore Taylor Formico added 11 digs, but UCLA dropped a three-set decision to #2 Washington on Friday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 25-8. Freshman Reily Buechler recorded seven kills for the Bruins (15-7, 6-5 Pac-12), while junior Karly Drolson tallied six digs.
Washington (23-0, 12-0 Pac-12) led wire-to-wire in set one. The Bruins were within two early at 7-5 before the Huskies went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 13-6. The Huskies' largest lead of the set was 11 at 22-11, as they went on to win the opener 25-15. Lowe had five kills in the first, while Buechler added three. The Bruins were out-hit .619 to .450.
After dropping the first two points of set two, the Bruins rallied to take their first lead of the match thanks to a UW service error and kills by Lowe and redshirt sophomore Haley Lawless to make it 3-2 UCLA. The Bruins led at 5-4, but it would be their last lead of the set and the evening, as the Huskies reeled off three in a row and a 10-1 run to make it 14-6.
Washington's largest lead was nine at 17-8, as the Bruins from that point could only get as close as four at 18-14. The Huskies would win the second set 25-17. Buechler and Lowe each had four kills, while Lawless added three. Defensively, Formico had six digs and Drolson notched five. UCLA was out-hit .300 to .026.
The third set was all Huskies, who scored nine of the first 11 and hit .533 for the set. Washington's biggest lead of the set was 17, which was also its final margin of the third at 25-8. The Bruins had only four kills in the set, with Lowe providing half of them.
The Bruins look to rebound on Sunday against Washington State at 11 a.m. at the John Wooden Center. Free video and live stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.
