Sixth-Seeded Men's Tennis Blanks Cal Poly, 4-0 in NCAA First Round
May 10, 2014 | Men's Tennis
UCLA won the doubles point for the eighth-straight match with wins at court Nos. 1 and 2. Adrien Puget and Karue Sell were perfect at court No. 2, taking an 8-0 victory over Devin Barber and Corey Pang. Despite an 8-5 Cal Poly upset at court No. 3, the Bruins clinched the point shortly thereafter when 10th-ranked Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald posted an 8-5 win over Marco Comuzzo and Matt Thomson at the No. 1 spot.
The Mustangs put up a solid fight in singles as well, actually taking first sets at the top two courts over UCLA's top-ranked Clay Thompson and second ranked Giron. The Bruins, however, quickly got straight set wins from Joseph Di Giulio (court No. 6) and Sell (court No. 5) to take a 3-0 lead. McDonald would get the clinching win at the No. 3 spot, where he downed Jurgen De Jager, 6-4, 6-3 to give UCLA the 4-0 win.
When play was suspended, UCLA's Gage Brymer was up a set and up 3-2 in the second at court No. 4, while court Nos. 1 and 2 were both in third sets.
With the loss, Cal Poly ends its season with an 11-13 record.
