UCLA Men's Tennis Headed to Georgia for NCAA Round of 16
May 11, 2014 | Men's Tennis
UCLA (24-3) controlled all facets of Sunday's match, taking a pair of 8-3 wins at court Nos. 1 and 2 in doubles to claim the one point awarded for doubles play.
The Bruins then went on to win five of six first sets in singles action to keep the momentum going. After teaming with Adrien Puget to win in doubles, sophomore Karue Sell was dominant in singles play at court No. 6, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Andrew Raphaelson. Playing next door at court No. 5, Puget also took care of business in straight sets, downing Ciaran Fitzgerald, 6-3, 6-2 to make the score 3-0 in favor of UCLA.
Junior Marcos Giron, the nation's No. 2-ranked player, would get the clinching win at court No. 2, as his 6-3, 7-5 victory over Uros Petronijevic sealed the victory for the Bruins.
UCLA and Tennessee have not met in the NCAA Tournament since 2005. The Bruins beat the Volunteers, 4-1 in the round of 16 that year en route to the NCAA title. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2013, a 4-1 UCLA win at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors. UCLA leads the all-time series 9-4.
With the loss on Sunday, San Diego ends its season with an 18-8 overall record.
