No. 1 UCLA Downs Wake Forest, 2-1, to Remain Unbeaten

September 13, 2014 | Women's Soccer

Los Angeles, Calif. - Top-ranked UCLA gave up its first goal of the season but remained unbeaten at 6-0-1 after a 2-1 victory over Wake Forest (2-4-0) on Friday evening.

The Bruins scored a pair of early goals in just over a minute span. Rosie White converted a penalty kick at 9:57 after Sam Mewis was taken down in the box, and Mewis scored the second goal at 11:10.

UCLA held Wake Forest to no shots for the first 61 minutes before Kendall Fischlein sent a shot wide in the 62nd and 64th minutes. Fischlein would play a key role in Wake Forest breaking UCLA's shutout streak in the 79th minute, taking a pass from Pilar Torres and heading it to Riley Ridgik breaking in the center of the box. Ridgik's shot to the upper left corner beat a diving Katelyn Rowland for the first goal given up by her and the Bruins in 772 minutes.

“We came out really fast with two goals in the first 11 minutes and played well for the majority of the first half,” said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. “I think we took our foot off the gas a little bit, and obviously in the second half we kind of lost our focus a bit. To Wake's credit, they came out and pressed a bit more and looked to attack a bit more and came out with a goal.”

UCLA's offense was on the attack in the first half, totaling 10 shots in the half. Mewis was streaking towards goal after taking a Smith pass when she was pushed from behind by a Wake Forest defender. White took the penalty kick and slotted it just past Wake Forest goalkeeper Lindsay Preston for her third goal of the season. Just barely a minute later, Sarah Killion sent a long pass from midfield down the right side of the field to Taylor Smith, and Smith sent a diagonal pass back to Mewis in the center of the field. Mewis one-timed it past Preston into the right corner for her fifth goal in seven games.

The Bruins return to action on Friday, Sept. 19 at Texas.

Notes: UCLA's unbeaten streak moves to 28 games … The Bruins' shutout streak ends at seven games and 772 minutes … Sarah Killion has a goal or assist in six of UCLA's seven games … Sam Mewis has a goal in five of UCLA's seven games … UCLA has held opponents to single-digit shot totals in 18 of its last 19 games … Goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland set a new record for consecutive shutout minutes in a single-season with 638, breaking her own record of 564, set in 2012 … Wake Forest goalkeeper Lindsay Preston set a new career-high with nine saves.
