Scouting the Golden Bears
The Cal Golden Bears enter the weekend with an overall record of 5-3-2 and 0-1-2 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Golden Bears are winless in their last four matches, including back-to-back draws last weekend with Oregon State and Washington. Cal will square off with San Diego State on Friday before coming to Westwood on Monday. On the road this season, Cal is 0-2-0. UCLA Blanks SDSU in Pac-12 Home Opener
On Monday, UCLA hosted the San Diego State Aztecs in its Pac-12 home opener and came away with a, 4-0, shutout victory. After a scoreless first half, the Bruin offense supplied a barrage of goals in the second half to take down the Aztecs. UCLA scored three goals in a span of 92 seconds to propel the team to victory. Jose Hernandez netted a pair of goals, while Seyi Adekoya and Stephen Payne each pitched in one apiece.
Jones and Yueill Return From U-20 MNT
UCLA freshmen Malcolm Jones and Jackson Yueill were two of 21 players that were called to represent the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team at the Four Nations Tournament in Germany. The team was defeated by Germany in the tournament opener on Oct. 6, drew with Scotland on Oct. 9 and drew with Mexico on Oct. 12. Both Jones and Yueill have extensive National Team experience, each serving as consistent members of the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team before coming to campus this fall. The call to the U-20's represented the first such call-up to this level for both players. In the history of the program, UCLA players have logged 476 international caps for the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team, led by Carlos Bocanegra's 23.
Seyi and Jose Lead the Way
UCLA sophomore striker Seyi Adekoya and freshman midfielder Jose Hernandez have served as the catalysts for the UCLA offense this season. Both players are tied for the conference lead with seven goals apiece, while Hernandez' one assist puts him in the conference lead with 15 points. Among freshmen nationally, Hernandez is T-4th in total points. Both players sit just two goals back of last year's team leader, Leo Stolz (9).
Youth Reigns Supreme
For UCLA this season, the youth has carried the scoring load through ten games. Of the Bruins' 23 goals, 20 have been scored by freshmen or sophomores. Additionally, the freshmen and sophomores have racked up 52 of the team's 66 points, accounting for 79 percent of the team's scoring output. The complete scoring breakdown by class can be found below.
| Class | Goals | Assists | Points |
| Freshman | 12 | 6 | 30 |
| Sophomore | 8 | 6 | 22 |
| Junior | 1 | 5 | 7 |
| Senior | 2 | 3 | 7 |
UCLA Offense On Rampant Pace
The UCLA offense has been on point so far in 2015 and leads the way in the Pac-12 Conference. The Bruins enter the weekend with 23 goals through the first 11 games of the season, the most through the first 11 games for a UCLA team since 2003, when they had 28. The Bruins currently lead the Pac-12 in total goals and goals per game (1.90) and are currently on pace to score just over 38 goals in the regular season.
Second Half/Overtime Adjustments
UCLA has been a completely different team in the second half and overtime so far this season. 20 of the team's 23 goals have been scored in the second half or overtime and 105 of their 159 shots have come in the second half or overtime. The shot differential in the second half and overtime also favors UCLA, 105-62, over opponents.
Michael Amick the Iron Man
UCLA junior defender Michael Amick has been an iron man for the Bruins in his three years in Westwood. He has appeared in 52 of a possible 55 games in his career and had a streak of 40 consecutive starts spanning from 2013 to 2015 broken on Sunday, October 4 when he was unable to play due to a minor injury. Last season, Amick led all UCLA field players in minutes played, logging 2,287 minutes. As a freshman in 2013, Amick finished the season with 1,484 minutes logged, tops among Bruin freshmen and fourth among all UCLA players.
Salcedo Captures Win Number 150
UCLA Head Coach Jorge Salcedo has had a very successful tenure in Westwood, going 150-58-38 in 246 career games at the helm. The Bruin head man reached win number 150 on Monday, which makes him just the third UCLA head coach to reach that mark. He currently has the third most wins of any UCLA head coach, trailing just Sigi Schmid (322) and Ed “Jock” Stewart (194). Salcedo trails only California's Head Coach Kevin Grimes in career wins among active Pac-12 head coach's at their current school.
