Women's Soccer Dropped by Cal

October 30, 2015 | Women's Soccer

UCLA gave up six second half goals in a 7-0 loss at 20th-ranked California on Thursday afternoon. Pac-12 leading goal scorer Arielle Ship had a hat trick and an assist as the Golden Bears remained unbeaten at home and improved their record to 13-4-2, 6-3-0 in the Pac-12. UCLA dropped to 8-8-1, 4-4-1.

It was a defensive game for most of the first half until the 40:40 mark when Ship broke the scoreless tie with her 12th goal of the season off a through ball from Karly Graf. Prior to the goal, the teams had been limited to six total shots, five by Cal and one by UCLA. Two of those shots by the Golden Bears, however, hit wood, as Ifeoma Onumonu hit the crossbar in the seventh minute and Annia Mejia hit the post in the 28th minute.

Cal exploded for six goals in the second half, the first coming just three minutes into the half on an own goal when a cross from the left flank was deflected in by Reema Bzeih. Just two and a half minutes later, the Bears made it 3-0 after a turnover at midfielder led to a goal by Onumonu. The Bruins had a chance to get on the board in the 59th minute when Darian Jenkins was fouled in the box, but Annie Alvarado, who was 3-for-3 this season on penalty kicks, pushed her kick wide. The Bears scored again off a turnover just two minutes later to give Cal a 4-0 lead and then tacked on three more goals for the final tally.

Cal outshot UCLA, 19-8, while UCLA had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2. Bruin goalkeeper Siri Ervik had three saves, while Cal goalkeeper Emily Boyd earned the shutout and made five saves.

UCLA will next play at No. 4 Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3:30pm. The match will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.

Notes: The seven goals allowed were the most by a Bruin team since giving up seven goals to North Carolina in 2009, and the seven-goal loss was UCLA's biggest since a 7-0 defeat at Santa Clara in the 1999 NCAA Tournament.
