ERIN, Wis. - Senior Jonathan Garrick recorded eight birdies in his opening round at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, shooting a 4-under 68, as the 13th-ranked Bruins are third as a team after 18 holes at the Erin Hills Golf Course.
Garrick made birdies on holes #1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 14 and 17, going out in 33 and coming home in 35. The round could have been even lower if not for a double bogey at the fourth, in addition to bogeys at the 13th and 15th. Garrick, the team's top scorer at last month's season-opening Northern Intercollegiate, has finished T-6 and T-7 in his two appearances at this tournament over the last two seasons and is second after 18 holes, one back of leader Andrew Buchanan (SMU).
Freshman Cole Madey shot an even-par 72 with birdies on #8, #10 and #13 to go with 12 pars and three bogeys to put him in a tie for 17th. Fellow freshman Patrick Murphy was 1-over (T-23) in his opening round with a steady 15 pars to go with a birdie (#12) and a pair of bogeys.
Senior Jake Knapp started his round off with an eagle on the opening par-5, but despite birdies at #9 and #14, was unable to get anything going and shot a 4-over 76 to put him in a tie for 35th. Freshman Phil Delisi made birdies at the ninth and 15th, but shot 5-over (77), tying him for 44th. Sophomore Brandon Mai, playing as an individual, had four birdies and shot a 75 (+3) to place him in a tie for 30th.
As a team, the Bruins shot a 1-over 289, nine shots back of SMU and seven behind second-place Oklahoma State.
The Bruins tee off on the first hole at 7:20 a.m. PT with Delisi, Knapp, Murphy, Madey and Garrick going out with groups from SMU and Oklahoma State. Mai begins his second round on the 10th at 8:10 a.m. PT.
