December 28, 2015 | Gymnastics
Stella Savvidou, who competed for Cyprus at the 2015 World Championships, has enrolled at UCLA for the winter quarter and will compete for the Bruins in the upcoming 2016 gymnastics season.
Savvidou, who hails from Melbourne, Australia and trains at Methodist Ladies College Gymnastics Club, was an all-around finalist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and also competed at the 2015 European Games. She won the Australian Level 10 national vault and bars titles in 2015 and helped lead her Victorian State team to its second-straight team championship. In 2014, Savvidou was second in the all-around and vault at the national championships. Savvidou was named the 2015 Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Award-winner for Sporting Excellence and was the 2014 Senior Gymnast of the Year and Senior School Sports Achiever of the Year at Methodist Ladies College.
"We're excited to have Stella join our team," said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. "She brings with her a tremendous amount of competitive experience, as well as a strong appreciation for gymnastics and the opportunity she's been given to compete in college. We look to her to add depth, in particular to our vault and bars squad."
Savvidou will be the third Bruin to have competed at the 2015 World Championships, joining senior Danusia Francis, who competed for Jamaica, and signee Madison Kocian, who won uneven bars gold for the U.S.
UCLA's season begins on Sunday, Jan. 10 in Pauley Pavilion against Alabama. Tickets are available now at uclabruins.com/tickets.
