LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The 10th-ranked Bruins rallied from a 4-2 deficit to score six unanswered runs and post an 8-4 victory over Hawai'i on Saturday at the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium.
The Bruins (8-2) recorded 13 hits, as sophomores Gabrielle Maurice and Delaney Spaulding each posted three, with Maurice adding three RBI. Senior Gracie Goulder notched a pair of hits.
In the circle, senior Ally Carda (4-1) earned the win in relief, striking out four in 3 1/3 shutout innings, giving up a hit and two walks. Freshman Selina Ta'amilo started and fanned two in 3 2/3 frames, allowing four runs, six hits and four walks.
The Rainbow Wahine (5-4) scored the game's first run in their initial at-bat. With one out, Kayla Wartner reached on an infield single, Keiki Carlos singled through the left side and Leisha Liilii walked to load the bases for Heather Morales, who bounced out to short to score Wartner to make it 1-0.
UCLA got on top with a pair in the third. With one out, Carda walked and was plated on a double to right-center by Spaulding to even the score. A Maurice single to right put the Bruins up 2-1.
Hawai'i went back in front with three in the fourth. With one out, Rachel Lack walked and Sarina Jamarillo singled up the middle. Both runners then stole the next base, and one out later, were tripled home by Tayana Mata to give the Rainbow Wahine the 3-2 lead. A single to right-center by Lindsey Willmon brought home Mata with the fourth run for Hawai'i.
In the fifth, the Bruins rallied back to take the lead. Junior Allexis Bennett led off with a slap single to third, and one out later, Spaulding doubled down the right field line. On the play, Spaulding got caught up between second and third, which also put Bennett in a pickle between third and home. But during the relay, third baseman Kristina Akiona dropped the ball, which allowed Bennett to score the Bruins' third run and Spaulding to take third. A Maurice single to left evened the festivities at four.
After senior Stephany LaRosa bounced into a fielder's choice to force Maurice at second, junior Brittany Moeai singled up the middle. LaRosa took third on the hit and when Carlos' throw got away, LaRosa scampered home to give the Bruins a 5-4 lead. Moeai took second on the error and was pinch-run for by sophomore Robyn Corruth, who scored on a single to right-center by junior Mysha Sataraka to make it 6-4.
The Bruins tacked on a couple more insurance runs in the sixth. Goulder led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a fielding error. After a Bennett sacrifice, Carda singled to left to plate Goulder with the Bruins' seventh run. Carda was retired at second on the play, but Spaulding followed with a double and a Maurice single scored her to put UCLA up 8-4.
