UCLA Jumps Four Spots on Final Day to Finish 5th at Southern Highlands

The 11th-ranked UCLA men's golf team moved up four more spots in the final round on Wednesday to finish in 5th place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas. The Bruins had the third-best round of 279 (-9) on the final day of competition.

UCLA had a three-round total of 857 (-7) and passed Pac-12 foes California and USC today. Fourth-ranked Texas consistenly turned in top rounds during the tournament and won the title with a three-round total of 838 (-26), 10 strokes ahead of second-place No. 23 Oklahoma (848, -16). There was a tie for third with a pair of teams moving in different directions. No. 22 Oklahoma State (855, -9), had a disastrous round of 297 (+9) today while sixth-ranked Arizona State (855, -9) was the biggest mover on day three, vaulting five spots with a 280 (-8) today. Top-ranked Illinois finished in sixth place at 858 (-6) while 10th-ranked Texas Tech was tied for seventh with California at 861 (-3). Third-ranked USC dropped six spots on the final day to finish in ninth at 867 (+3). Overall, seven of the 15 teams beat par in round three, led by the Sooners' 277 (-11).

Junior Jonathan Garrick moved up 22 spots today with a 68 (-4) to finish in a tie for 11th place with a three-round total of 213 (-3).Garrick had an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys today. UCLA senior Matt Pinizzotto moved up 16 spots today to also finish tied for 11th (213, -3) with a third round of 69 (-3). Pnizzotto, who recently won the TMC Spring Invitational, featured four birdies and one bogey on the final day. Junior Lorens Chan posted his second straight round of 71 (-1) to move up 11 spots into a tie for 34th with a total of 217 (+1). Chan had three birdies and two bogeys on Wednesday. Senior Manav Shah moved up 10 spots into a tie for 39th place with a third round of 71 (-1). His three-round total of 218 (+2), featured four birdies and three bogeys today. Junior Jake Knapp made two birdies on the day, but endured four bogeys for a 2-over par 74. He finished tied for 57th with a three-day total of 222 (+6).

While his team finished in 14th place, Alabama's Robby Shelton shot a tournament-tying low round of 65 (-7) today to win the individual title with a total of 201 (-15), six strokes better than ASU's Jon Rahm and Texas' Beau Hossler (207, -9).

The Bruins return to action in two weeks after finals week at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Fla., on March 23-24.
