LOS ANGELES - Senior Ally Carda was masterful again in the circle, striking out seven in a two-hit shutout on Friday at Easton Stadium, while senior Gracie Goulder provided the only offense #10 UCLA needed with a second-inning RBI double, as the Bruins won their Pac-12 opener against Utah by a score of 1-0.
The Bruins improve to 25-5 and win their 11th in a row, while the Utes fall to 17-7.
Carda (13-3) had 1-2-3 innings in all of her odd numbered frames, striking out two each in the second and seventh. She allowed only two baserunners, both Kate Dickman, to get as far as second base, giving up just three baserunners overall on two singles and a hit by pitch.
The Bruins had seven hits, with junior Allexis Bennett recording a pair of singles.
UCLA left nine on base, including three in the first inning, but the only run it would need came in the second. Junior Mysha Sataraka led off with a walk and scored on an opposite field double to left-center by Goulder.
The hardest hit balls by the Utes both came from Hannah Flippen, who in the third and sixth innings connected on deep fly balls to the warning track, but Bennett came up with them both times to keep Utah off the board.
The Bruins and the Utes tangle again on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks, with free audio and live stats also available on UCLABruins.com.
