UCLA Rowing Excels on Day One of San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO - The No. 11-ranked UCLA women's rowing program had three first-place finishes in four races at the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday morning in Mission Bay.

With the three first-place finishes and one second-place finish, UCLA was able to propel each of its crews to Grand Final races on Sunday.

The Bruins' varsity eight crew raced to a second-place finish in UCLA's first race of the day. UCLA's V8+ boat posted a time of 6:47.47, just 0.74 seconds behind first-place competitor San Diego (6:46.73).

UCLA's varsity four, second varsity eight and novice eight boats each followed with consecutive first-place finishes in their respective heats. The V4+ crew posted a time of 7:46.74, well ahead of second-place participant Sacramento State (7:58.36) in the five-boat heat.

The Bruins' second varsity eight cruised past second-place Duke in UCLA's third race of the morning. The Bruins logged a time of 7:00.84, crossing the finish line 11.01 seconds ahead of Duke in the six-boat heat.

UCLA closed its morning with a first-place finish in the novice eight race, finishing ahead of seven other boats. The Bruins posted a time of 7:24.93, just 2.20 seconds ahead of second-place competitor San Diego (7:27.13).
