No. 7 UCLA Opens 2015 with a 4-1 Win at CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The seventh-ranked Bruins won their second-straight season-opener over CSUN with a 4-1 win on Thursday afternoon at CSUN's Matador Sand Volleyball Facility.
The UCLA No.1 doubles pair of Kamila Tan and Ivey Schmitt was the only UCLA duo to drop their opening match, falling to the Matador tandem of Casey Hinger and Kelcie Randazzo, 21-17, 21-14. Both Tan and Schmitt had eight kills and six digs. Tan also added two blocks and hit a match-high .467.
At #2 doubles, the Bruins' Elise Zappia and Madie Smith defeated CSUN's Mahina Haina and Katie Sato, 21-8, 21-7. Smith had a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs and hit a match-high .556. Zappia had 16 digs and five kills to go with one ace.
Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver won a tightly contested match, 21-19, 21-18 at No. 3 doubles over CSUN's Julie Haake and Nicolette Pinkney. Both Consani and Weaver hit over .500 and posted double-doubles on the day. Consani had 11 digs and 11 kills while her partner posted 12 kills and 17 digs. Consani had two blocks while both of the Bruins had strong service games. Consani had four aces with Weaver registering three.
At #4 doubles, Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye posted a straight-set victory (21-14, 25-23) over the Matadors' team of Cieana Stinson and Stephanie Serna. Inouye had 13 kills (.526) and added nine digs and three aces. Drolson had nine kills, 16 digs and an ace.
At #5 doubles, Kendahl Hettick and Lexi Jasper-Baylin rallied to post a three-set victory (16-21, 21-15, 16-14) over CSUN's tandem of Alia Casino and Nada Dragovic. Hettick had a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs and added four aces and three blocks. Jasper-Baylin contributed nine kills and 16 digs with five aces.
In an exhibition match, UCLA's Natalie Miller and Anastasia Kunz rallied for a three-set victory (19-21, 21-16, 18-16) over CSUN's Lauren Conati and Brianna Johnson. Miller had a match-high 32 digs to go with 11 kills, three aces and a block. Kunz hit a match-high .594 while recording 23 kills, 17 digs, four aces and two blocks.
The Bruins return to action on Wednesday, March 11 when they travel to face No. 6 Loyola Marymount at 9:00 a.m. at Playa del Rey, Calif.
