
UCLA Cruises to Dual Meet Sweep over Oklahoma

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track & field team swept Oklahoma in both the men and women's competition on Saturday at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. The women outscored the Sooners 104-52, while the men won by a score of 99-46, at Drake Stadium.
The Bruins were dominant throughout the meet, sweeping the points in several events while posting personal and season bests in the process.
UCLA took the top two spots in the women's 1,500m as Kelsey Smith won on Senior Day with a time of 4:24.25. Aliya Shirif followed in second at 4:28.57.
Another senior, Brea Buchanan won in the 100m hurdles with a season best time of 13.49. She also led off on the winning 4x100m relay team.
The Bruins also took the top two spots in the 800m as a pair of seniors earned the key points. Ally Courtnall won with a time of 2:14.58 while Ava Kent followed at 2:17.80.
UCLA claimed the top four spots in the 3,000m as Sabrina Seay won with a time of 10:14.45. Roni Yamane followed in second at 10:33.94 while Jessica Cushing-Murray was third in 10:34.01 and Kelly Brooks round out the quartet with a time of 10:49.28.
In the field, the Bruins were 1-2 in the long jump. Maya Brown won the event with a lifetime best of 20-0.25. Senior Tatum Souza was second with a leap of 18-7.75.
UCLA also finished 1-2 in the triple jump as Faith Anumba won with a mark of 39-3 and Monique Van was second at 37-10.
The Bruins continued to rack up points in the field as Zibby Boyer led a UCLA foursome in the high jump. Boyer won the event at 5-8.75 and was followed by Alexis Walker at 5-7. Freshmen McKenzie Selig and Kaelin Davis placed third and fourth, respectively.
In the shot put Torie Owers won with a season best 52-7.25 while the multi-event talents of Souza uncorked a lifetime best of 44-11.75 to finish second.
UCLA claimed the top five spots in the pole vault as senior Elena Clarke won with a season best clearance of 13-1.75. Freshman Sammy Marumoto also cleared 13-1.75, which was a lifetime best to finish second overall.
Senior All-American Ida Storm started out the meet with an easy victory in the hammer, winning the event with a throw of 200-4.
In the men's 1,500m the Bruins took the top three spots, led by a personal best time of 3:44.51 from Austin O'Neil. Lane Werley followed in second at 3:45.23 while Daniel Herrera was third at 3:45.56.
Freshman Steele Wasik once again won the 110m hurdles, this time crossing the line at 14.35. Fellow newcomer Misana Viltz was third at 14:44.
Another UCLA freshman came through with a victory as Joe Herrera won the 400m with a time of 47.28. He also anchored the 4x100m relay to a season best time of 40.97.
Junior Nick Hartle won the 800m with a time of 1:48.07 while Jordan Senko and Max Davis finished 1-2 in the 2,000m steeple with times of 5:55.83 and 6:04.94, respectively.
Closing out the distance events for the Bruins was a 1-2 finish in the 3,000m led by a winning time of 8:19 by Sergey Sushchickh. Myles Smith followed at 8:30.79.
In the field for the men, Idrees Bernard won for the second straight week in the long jump with a leap of 22-10.50. Blake Selig followed in second at 20-8.50. Bernard also placed second in the triple jump at 48-5.25.
Cody Crampton cleared a season best 6-11 in the high jump to win the event while Mark Sakioka posted a season best of 16-8.75 to claim the pole vault.
Senior Alec Faldermeyer won the hammer once again for the Bruins, this time with a season best throw of 208-11. Derek Eager followed in second with a throw of 207-10 and also placed second in the javelin with a season best of 223-5.
The Bruins will next compete at the 57th Annual Mt. SAC Relays, which will begin on Thursday, April 16, at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the Mt. San Antonio College campus in Walnut, Calif.
